Paludicella articulata is a species of bryozoans often involved in persistent biofouling, especially in public water systems. It thrives in clean, flowing water.
Key characteristics include:
Paludicella reproduces asexually by fragmentation and sexually by microscopic swimming larvae. There are also dormant bodies (“hibernaculae”) produced asexually which appear to resist desiccation and other unfavorable conditions. The life cycle and ecology of this species are poorly known.
